There are seven areas of learning and development that shape our educational programmes. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

These three areas, the prime areas, are:

• communication and language

• physical development

• personal, social and emotional development

We also support children in four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied:

• literacy

• mathematics

• understanding the world

• expressive arts and design

Currently these activities may not be available due to Covid-19 restrictions

Cooking activities take place on various days of the week using specialist facilities within the setting. The children are encouraged to prepare appropriate food groups, engage in appropriate baking processes, including weighing and measuring, and also to enjoy a healthy eating lifestyle.

Physical Development activities include jumping off ramps onto mats, rolling on crash mats, running in and out of slaloms, balancing on benches, climbing on climbing frames and other similar activities.

Music and Movement is available throughout the week.
The children are encouraged to interpret different types of music in a variety of ways, including dance, music and mime, exercise and self-expression. Music and mime in particular is popular with the children, who present a wealth of creativity and imagination as well as enjoyment in physical exercise, social co-ordination and positive communication. These very popular workshops, which are often led by the children, are delivered and co-ordinated by staff at The Saplings Pre-School.
